Are Peel And Stick Countertops Good? Should You Invest In Them?

If you’re looking to add a whole new look to your outdated counters but you’re on a tight budget for any major renovation, peel and stick countertops are a great option. These are basically giant stickers made from different materials like vinyl, contact paper, or laminate. Peel and stick countertops are a budget-friendly modification that you can consider for a temporary upgrade to your home.

At McClellands Contracting and Roofing, we are renowned for providing high-quality home remodel services. We always aim to provide homeowners with useful insights about home remodeling, no matter their budget.

In this blog post, we will explore peel and stick countertops so you can choose whether they are the right upgrade for your home!

Why Are Peel And Stick Countertops A Popular Choice?

Peel and stick countertops have become a popular choice in recent years for several reasons:

  • First, they provide a way to give a fresh, new look to your outdated countertops without spending too much money.
  • Second, the installation process is straightforward and can be completed by most homeowners without professional help. This makes peel and stick countertops very appealing for those on a budget or looking for a temporary update before a larger renovation.
  • Additionally, peel and stick countertops are available in multiple colors and patterns so you can match your existing kitchen and other areas of your home that have countertops. You can also use countertop peel and stick paper on cabinets.

How To Install Peel And Stick Countertops

Materials Needed

  1. Peel and stick countertop material
  2. Utility knife or blade
  3. Hard plastic piece or straight edge
  4. Denatured alcohol or adhesive promoter (optional)
  5. Clean rags

Step 1: Prepare The Surface

Clean the existing countertop very well. Remove any dirt, grease, or debris. Lightly sand the surface and wipe it down with a cleaning solution.

Step 2: Measure And Cut

Carefully measure the countertop area you want to cover. Use a utility knife or blade to cut the peel and stick material to the right size.

Step 3: Peel Off The Backing

Slowly peel off the backing paper from one end of the peel and stick paper. Make sure to not peel the entire backing at once. This can reduce the sticking capability of the countertop peel and stick paper and can increase the chances of mistakes.

Step 4: Apply The Peel And Stick Sheet

Apply Peel And Stick Sheet

Position the exposed sticky end at one corner of the countertop. Gradually peel off the remaining backing while smoothing the material onto the surface.

Step 5: Remove Bubbles

Use a hard plastic piece to firmly press and smooth the material as you apply it. This will help remove any air bubbles that form.

Step 6: Trim The Excess Sheet

After applying the material, use the utility knife to trim off any extra material hanging over the edges of the countertop.

Step 7: Seal The Edges (Optional)

If desired, apply a clear sealant along the edges and seams for a finished look and added protection.

Step 8: Apply Heat (Optional)

Carefully use a hair dryer or heat gun to apply heat to the installed material. This can help activate and strengthen the adhesive.

Step 9: Allow To Set

Let the newly installed peel and stick countertop sit for at least 24 hours before using it, following the manufacturer's instructions.

When Are Peel And Stick Countertops A Good Choice?

Peel and stick countertops act as temporary makeup. They are best for areas that you don’t use often. These can be frustrating for busy kitchens because the rough use can result in peeling, bubbling, or damage over time. However, if you do opt to cover your kitchen counters, choose a heat-resistant peel and stick countertop to avoid the risk of fire hazards.

For low-traffic areas like laundry rooms, home offices, or rental properties where you don't plan on making permanent changes, peel and stick countertops can provide a quick and budget-friendly facelift.

Consider Installing Peel And Stick Countertops If:

  • You are on a tight budget and don’t want to spend on major renovations.
  • You want to add a new look to your rental property and need a temporary solution.
  • Your kitchen is a low-traffic area and you don’t need any durable and tough surfaces.

Don’t Consider Peel And Stick Countertops If:

  • You’re looking for a long-term investment that enhances the overall value of your property.
  • You are looking for a durable and high-performance countertop that can withstand the wear and tear of daily use.
  • Your existing countertop has an uneven and rough surface as the peel and stick countertop paper will not stick to the surface properly.

Can You Put Peel And Stick Sheets Over Laminate Countertops?

Yes, you can install peel and stick sheets over laminate countertops. However, the smooth, non-porous surface of laminate can make it tricky for the material to adhere properly. To ensure a strong bond, lightly roughen the laminate surface before applying the peel and stick paper. This will help the adhesive grip better and prevent it from peeling off over time.

Moisture can weaken the adhesive, so using additional adhesives like epoxy or liquid nails is recommended. These adhesives create a stronger bond between the material and the laminate surface, ensuring their longevity even in humid environments.

To further improve adhesion, place heavy objects (like plywood or even a heavy box) on the peel and stick surface for a few hours after installation. This will help the adhesive set properly and create a more secure bond.

How Long Do Peel And Stick Countertops Last?

Peel and stick countertop tiles typically last 1-5 years, depending on installation quality, moisture exposure, and maintenance. Higher quality materials and proper care can extend their lifespan.

To ensure longevity, thoroughly clean and prepare the surface before application, use additional adhesive if needed, and avoid excessive heat or moisture exposure. Routine cleaning with mild soap and water will also help maintain their appearance and functionality. Remember, proper installation and care are key to maximizing the lifespan of your peel and stick countertops.
