The fascia must be strong enough to support the weight of your new gutters, especially when they're filled with water during heavy rainfall. Taking the time to check this will save you from expensive and stressful problems later.

Step 2: Measure and Mark Your Gutter Placement

Accurate measurements are very important for proper gutter installation. Use your measuring tape to determine the length of each section where you'll install gutters. While measuring, you should add about 1/4 inch extra to your measurements to ensure you have sufficient gutter length.

As you measure along the fascia, make marks every 10 feet and indicate a point that's 1/4 inch lower than your starting point at each mark. This creates the proper slope of 1/2 inch per 10 feet, which is important for water to flow correctly through your gutter system.

Step 3: Determine Downspout Locations

Properly placed downspouts are very important for effective water drainage. You should plan to install a downspout for approximately every 30 feet of gutter. For any gutter sections longer than 20 feet, consider installing two downspouts for adequate drainage.

Choose locations where water can be directed away from your foundation and where downspouts won't interfere with walkways, driveways, or other areas of your property. Mark these locations clearly on your fascia.

Step 4: Order Custom Seamless Gutters

Unlike sectional gutters you can purchase at a home improvement store, seamless gutters must be custom-made to fit your home's specific dimensions. You'll need to hire a local gutter professional who has the specialized equipment to manufacture these gutters on-site.

Step 5: Create Downspout Openings

Before attaching your gutters to the fascia, you'll need to create openings for the downspouts. Using the same measurements you took earlier, mark the locations for your downspout outlets on the gutters.

Place the downspout adapter over the marked area and trace its outline. Then you will need to carefully cut along the traced line, using your hacksaw or miter saw. 

Make the cut about 1/16 inch outside the line to ensure a proper fit. Pre-drill 1/8-inch holes around the opening for the rivets that will secure the outlet.

Step 6: Attach End Caps and Downspout Outlets

Apply a bead of your gutter sealant around the opening you just cut, then attach the downspout outlet and secure it with rivets. This creates a watertight seal that prevents leaking.

Next, install end caps on the ends of your gutter sections. Apply sealant to the inside of the end cap before attaching it to the gutter. This creates a seal that prevents water from escaping through the ends of your gutters.

Step 7: Install Hidden Hangers

Before mounting the gutters, you need to attach hidden hangers to them while they're still on the ground. 

These hangers fit under the lip of the gutter and provide support once installed. Hangers should be placed every 16 to 20 inches along the length of the gutter, with additional hangers within 6 inches of each end cap.

If you're installing gutters on angled fascia, use T-wedges with every third hanger to ensure the gutters sit properly against the fascia board.

Step 8: Mount the Gutters

This step requires at least two people because seamless gutters come in long sections that can be difficult to handle. Start by positioning your ladder near the center of where you'll install the gutter section.

Hold the gutter at the center and climb the ladder. Position the gutter under the drip edge of the roof to ensure water flows directly into the gutter. Secure it in the middle first by screwing the hanger into the fascia.

Next, move to the highest point of your slope and secure the gutter there. Work your way down, checking the slope with a level as you go to ensure proper drainage. Attach the gutter by screwing the hangers into the fascia every 16 to 20 inches.

Step 9: Install the Downspouts

Once your gutters are safely attached, it's time to install the downspouts. Begin by attaching the first elbow to the downspout outlet, making sure the crimped side is facing downward.

Hold the second elbow against the wall where you want your downspout to run. Measure the distance in between the two elbows and add 3 inches. Cut a piece of downspout for this length and use your gutter crimper to create crimp marks on one end so it fits snugly into the elbow.

Connect this piece between the two elbows. Then, measure from the bottom elbow to the ground, subtracting about 3 inches. Cut another piece of downspout to this length and crimp one end. Attach this piece to the lower elbow.

Secure the downspout to your home with mounting brackets, generally one near the top and another near the bottom.

Step 10: Install Gutter Guards (Optional)

If your home is surrounded by trees that shed leaves and debris, you might want to install gutter guards to reduce maintenance. These guards will help prevent leaves and larger debris from entering your gutters while allowing water to flow through.

To install gutter guards, simply place them on top of your gutters and secure them according to the manufacturer's instructions. Remember that even with guards, you'll still need to clean your gutters periodically.
